It's a weird situation. The city actually owns the land and most of the rides in the park, even stuff that was added right after SF took control. So Six Flags can sell neither the land or rides at this point unless a new agreement is made. *
On the other hand, attendance was amongst the worst in the chain 2003-2005 and now most of the park would need rebuilding. It's also questionable what kind of population with discretionable income will be remaining to even visit in 2006 if they were to reopen.
It doesn't seem to me that further investment required makes sense considering they were still years away from recouping what was already spent. The city has no money to assist so Six Flags will possibly cut their losses.
* I think Six Flags still owns Jester/Joker's Revenge. |

I hope SF DOES give up on New Orleans so if the city gets the funding to reopen the park down the line, I won't have to boycott it!
After what happened to Astroworld I cannot in clear conscience set foot in another SF property ever again - except Astroworld as much as I can go this year to say goodbye.
Unfortunately, I am still evacuated in Arlington and my car is high and dry and unflooded in a dry section of New Orleans. But I can't get back and get it out thanks to our idiot mayor. And I'm not sure if the family members I'm staying with will give me a ride down to Houston.
So here I am in Arlington within walking distance to SFOT, where I've been going every weekend, with now no NO DESIRE to visit there.
Because my heart, and solidarity, is with Houston.
As soon as it is possible I will be at Astroworld for every weekend it is open. I definitely feel I'll be able to make it for at least the start of Fright Fest.
Until then, SCREW SIX FLAGS!!!!!
And if I move from New Orleans, it WON'T be to a Six Flags market!
Right now I'm thinking Knoxville (Dollywood and near Smokey Mountains), Cincinnati (King's Island), Santa Claus (Holiday World) Birmingham (Visionland and close to family and friends who stay in NO), or Chattenooga (Lake Winnie and close to Smokey Mountains).
A lot of stress, and a lot of changes both in my life and in my coaster hobby...

Yes Frontrider, this storm has changed everyone's hobbies in the greater New Orleans area. It is really tragic. I too have no desire to ever visit any other Six Flags park ever again aside from Astroworld before it closes. The recent developments with Six Flags are really sickening.

Six Flags is going to rebuid the park with little money out of there pockets. The news is that the insurance money will foot most of the bill. SF cannot close the park, due to the city owning the land and rides.

And giving that the city is getting hundreds of millions of dollars in federal aid, that means the park qualifies to receive it, course it's up to city on how to spend it.

That is an encouraging thought. The park can most CERTAINLY file for FEMA!
