Has anyone heard about this?

The Texas Giant roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington will remain closed as engineers try to determine whether the ride is safe for thrill seekers, a park spokeswoman said today.
TOM FOX/DMN
The Texas Giant roller coaster at Six Flags over Texas will remain closed indefinitely to allow engineers to thoroughly inspect the ride.
View larger More photos Photo store Six Flags spokeswoman Sharon Parker said a supervisor detected a problem with a car on the track Monday afternoon and stopped the ride. About two dozen people on board got off safely.
Parker said engineers were trying to determine the problem and could not provide any more specifics on whether the problem was with the car or the track.
She said other rides at the park were operational.

First I heard of it but man it must have been a really slow day in Dallas news for this to make the paper. Seems very trivial to me and certainly not a news worthy item.
Is it the norm is Dallas for the paper to consider a ride shut down as news? |

Yes. It is everywhere as long as nothing else is hogging research time.

There's your key attention-grabbing words right there. And I'm stunned that a "Texas Giant roller coaster will be shuttered to the public all next year, as it undergoes a massive rebuild. No indication was given if this is related to that shutdown" quote, or something to that magnetic effect, was not included.

I don't thnik that they would close one of their most popular attractions unless there really was a problem. However, with the rebuild shutdown set for next year, it is highly possible that the ride will not re-open this year if the problem is serous enough. Look at the number of closures and shut-downs the Boardwalk Bullet in Kemah has been through since it opened.
Is the planned renovation of Giant something that wooden roller coasters have to go through periodically? Was the Cyclone ever shut down for a total rehab like this? I do remember them working on the tracks during the off season, and even at one point replacing quite a few sections. I do not remember a total rehab however. _________________ Last train departed the station Saturday, October 30, 2005. Gone but not forgotten - 38 years of wonderful memories! |

I think the rehab on this coaster may have to do with its roughness and the feeling that you are riding a coaster with square wheels.
Six Flags Chief Executive Mark Shapiro said he likes the “rickety nature’ of wooden coasters like the Texas Giant, but says it needs a smoother, faster ride and will have new trains installed as part of the renovation.
“The Giant is so huge. It’s turned into a dinosaur,” Shapiro said. “It needs a new life and we’re going to breathe new life into it.”

Off-season trackwork is a normal thing for a woodie, and a huge coaster (Giant) or a layout full of turns (Bullet) will need more TLC than most.
A full-scale rehab for a major ride like Giant is pretty rare, though. I'm glad to see it happen. I used to LIVE for Lone Star Coasterthon every year so I could get my hours and hours of ERT on Giant.
The last couple of years, I'd take one painful ride on Giant and then spend the rest of the night on Titan.
Rumors are circulating that it's going to be a complete tear-down and rebuild, probably everything but the footers. If they can put it back to its original specs, but with trains that can take the abuse, then those folks who've never experienced Giant 1.0 are going to be in for a shock.
Opening season (1990) on Giant at ACE Coastercon was something I may never forget. Those were some of the best coaster rides of my life that summer. _________________ Rides on the Bullet so far: 728 |

It was open yesterday late in the day and just as rough as ever. I really do hope it gets a good refurbish, it needs it. _________________ An Apple a day keeps Windows away
