Here are a few photos that were taken Saturday (10/6/07). This first post will be the 'announcement' signs...
The last one is the side of Zaragoza Theatre...

A few of the ride pieces have been partially stripped of paint, and a few track pieces have a little of the electric blue paint on them...

To orient everybody on the first photo, you can see the Crow's Nest Ferris Wheel in the background...
This last one was taken from Crow's Nest to show the site in relation to the Picnic Grounds...
The site photos were taken from outside the fence... I cropped out the fence 'pieces' that are in the original photos.

When I think of Goliath, I think of this giant structure and a really fast Hyper coaster. I dont really think of a fromer Batman coaster. O yeah I also think of one of the world's best coasters ever. And the giant helix.
Great photos Stacey!!! Kudos for you!!! _________________ |

Thanks, guys!
We were at the park today, and although I took a few photos, nothing much has changed from last week. More concrete and limestone have been broken up and piled, it appears that some shrubs may have been removed, and in a couple of spots there's a clear view of the Picnic Grounds from the fenceline.
We went to eat after we left the park tonight and got home really late... so I'll post this week's photos tomorrow.
*********
As far as the name "Goliath", at first I also thought "How does 'Goliath' fit the B&M inverted?" But a friend recently began referring to the ride as "the G-machine", which I actually think is pretty cool. It could refer either to the ride name or to the g-forces, so I started thinking of it as having "goliath g's" as opposed to the size of the ride itself.
Out of curiosity though, I looked up the definition of the word "goliath". From Merriam-Webster, the definition of 'goliath' is: 1) the Philistine 'warrior' of the Bible who was killed by David, and 2) Giant. Going to the word "Giant", it shows these definitions:
1: a legendary humanlike being of great stature and strength
2: a living being of great size; a person of extraordinary powers
3: something unusually large or powerful
From these are two specific depictions... "great stature/great size/unusually large" (size), and "strength/extraordinary powers/powerful" (power).
To refer to something as "Goliath", then, can speak of something's size or something's power; and G-forces can fit into the category of "power" or "powerful".
The ride may not have the comparative size or g-forces of the ride(s) we've come to know as "Goliath", but the name being given to this ride really isn't so far-fetched; it can fit this ride too.
But whatever the reasons for choosing the name (and obviously there are many reasons that could have been deciding factors), at this point I really don't care what they call it... I'm simply tickled that we're getting the ride because "something is better than nothing".
JMO, FWIW.

People, seriously. I know that you're excited to get a coaster in your home park and everything, but there have been some really, REALLY bad names given to SF coasters, and this is one of them.
Trying to justify it doesn't help the stupidity level of calling such a small coaster "Goliath".
Nor does it help to make sense of installing a clone of a coaster already right down the road at Sea World.
It's too bad they didn't move Greezed Lightnin out there.... _________________ Rides on the Bullet so far: 728 |

99.9999% of the people who ride are not.going.to.care. And the ones that do need an enema. |

I really hope I haven't taken this wrong - I'm assuming you're addressing me since I'm the only one in the thread that expressed a somewhat "opposing" opinion about the ride name and whether it's a *clone* (based on the dictionary definition of "clone"), and the only one on the thread who appears to be in SA ("...you're excited to get a coaster in your home park...")
Obviously everyone has their own opinion. We can certainly agree to disagree, and I, for one, have no problem with that.
Perhaps the choice of name doesn't make sense to some, but I personally prefer to keep an open mind because really, it doesn't matter what name a ride gets. If it's a good ride it will be liked and it will be ridden, by millions of people. Call me simplistic and stupid (but please, not to my face ), but I don't have to like a person's name to like the person; it's just a name.
Okay, so there's a difference between a person's name and how 'things' work in the industry, but this isn't the only ride to have a name that may seem 'misplaced', and I'm sure it won't be the last. So the choice is to dwell on whatever is perceived to be a negative, or look at the positives and enjoy them, despite anything negative.
And going back to the 'human' comparison (it's the best way I know of to explain the perspective), many of us have spouses, partners, bf/gf, friends, etc. No one is perfect, and everyone has flaws. But when we love someone or enjoy having someone as a friend, do we dwell on the few things that annoy us, or do we overlook those things and love them (or enjoy the friendship) for all the positives?
And for what it's worth, FT has only been my home park for 2 seasons (2006, 2007). Until October 30, 2005, AW was my home park, and had been since 1971 - we've only lived in SA a few short years.
I began posting construction photos only as a result of another member asking Jason (in a different thread) if he would be providing photos over the coming months. Since I'm here and Jason isn't, I decided to 'pick up the torch'. However, if my photos and opinion on the subject are going to be a source of contention, I can back away; I sure don't want anyone to be upset.

That statement alone provided me--also perplexed at the choice of the name--a reality check. Thanks for putting it that way Stacy.
Besides, I think when it opens, the name choice will be an afterthought. |

But clones creep me out, no matter what the name....
(OK before anyone gets upset, mirror image, 123 feet, not really a clone just very, very similar!)
But a clone WOULD creep me out.
I mean has anyone ever seen a movie with a clone and the clone was a good guy?
